04/08/2018 Council Preview – Caribbean Trail

Diverse night. We start the evening with no less than three closed sessions. The first involves ongoing litigation over the resolution of Sunnyvale’s redevelopment agency. The second one involves our semiannual performance review of the City Manager. The final one involves labor negotiations with our few unrepresented managers (managers who cannot be a part of a union or association because of the nature of their jobs).

04/24/2018 Council Preview – Not Much

This is a pretty simple meeting, it looks like. It was supposed to be longer, but the large item planned for tonight had to be pushed back. We can cancel meetings when there isn’t much on the agenda. However, we’re required by the City Charter to hold two meetings per month, and this is the second one, so however light, we have to hold this one.

We start the evening with a closed session to consider aspects of a proposed sale of the Unilever property.  I don’t know the details here (and probably couldn’t tell you if I did), but I note that there are multiple unrelated negotiating parties listed in the public notice.  The closed session is followed by a public study session regarding the update to the El Camino Real Specific Plan.

BREAKING NEWS: Sand Hill sells Macy’s to CityLine, the Downtown developers

Yesterday, Sand Hill closed escrow on the sale of the Sunnyvale Macy’s building to CityLine, the downtown developers. The sale ends Sand Hill’s interest in the downtown development, while solidifying CityLine’s ownership of all the downtown properties (except for the two city-owned parking lots).

Under existing agreements, the owner of the Macy’s property has certain veto rights over development plans in the the downtown area. By acquiring ownership of the Macy’s property, CityLine has considerably eased the approval process for the next stages of the downtown development.

I’ll just add that after nine years of wrestling with this issue, this is a highly satisfying development for me personally.

04/10/2018 Council Preview – Wage Theft

Pretty simple meeting, it looks like.

We start the evening with two closed sessions, one involving the County suing us over redevelopment issues, the other involving ongoing negotiations regarding the city’s Charles/Iowa property, which we’re considering turning into an affordable housing facility. This is followed by the general session, starting with a series of special orders. First up is swearing in the commissioners we appointed at our last meeting. Then we recognize Fair Housing Month and Earth Month.  Next is recognizing the winners of the 2018 Earth Day Video and Poster Contest. Finally, we recognize the latest set of Sunnyvale green businesses.

03/27/2018 Council Preview – Parking on Lori/Shirley

This looks like a pretty straightforward agenda.

We start the evening with a closed session regarding the undeveloped half of the Corn Palace land.  This is followed by the general session, which starts with no less than three special orders.  First is recognition of Youth Arts Month, then recognition of National Library Week. The third is recognition of the League of California Cities’ Women’s Caucus “Women of Persistence” honoree.  The LCC’s Women’s Caucus has seven board members from various California cities, including Sunnyvale, and the Caucus is recognizing an honoree from each board member’s city.
