07/17/2018 Council Preview – Project Appeal, Naming a Park, and Grand Jury Response

Again, a long and diverse meeting.

We start the meeting with no less than three closed sessions.  One apparently involves ongoing litigation over Sunnyvale’s Measure C gun control initiative, the other two involve performance evaluations of our City Manager and City Attorney.

No special orders or presentations, so we get straight to business. There’s a good-sized consent calendar, including a recreational soccer contract, (re)appointing a VTA BPAC representative, a contract related to a Sense of Place plan for the Lawrence Station Area, a water tank refurbishment contract, a landfill gas pump contract, a purchase order for services to repair sewer lines, another legal contract amendment, and second reading of an ordinance.

Joint Sunnyvale Town Hall with Councilmember Smith on Foodcycling

I’m a little late in posting this.  Councilmember Nancy Smith and I will be hosting a joint town hall meeting this Wednesday, July 18th from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Ponderosa Park building.  The focus will be on the city’s foodcycling program, which continues to generate questions and concerns, but we’ll probably be discussing whatever topics of issue people raise.  Light refreshments will be provided.

More details can be found here.

06/26/2017 Council Preview – Annual Budget

This is one of the most packed agendas I’ve seen in a very long time.

We start the meeting with two closed sessions.  The first looks like it involves our annual consideration of compensation for the City Attorney, one of the two employees that Council directly manages. The second involves “anticipated litigation” (and your guess is as good as mine on that one).

06/12/2018 Council Preview – Budget Public Hearing

Pretty diverse night.  We start the evening with a special council meeting. The Countywide Redevelopment Successor Agency Oversight Board is a body that makes decisions about how redevelopment agencies wind down and dispose of their assets, and it is comprised of representatives from the various entities that have an interest in the issue (the County, schools, the cities, etc). We need to appoint a new representative and alternate for the cities in the county, which will be decided by the Cities Association of Santa Clara County. Since Sunnyvale is one of the few cities left with outstanding redevelopment issues, we have a strong interest in being represented on this body. So we’ll be discussing who we intend to put forward as a nominee.

05/22/2018 Council Preview – Changing the City Charter

Pretty diverse night.

We start the evening with a joint study session with the Parks and Recreation Commission to discuss possibly amending the Municipal Code regarding our rules governing the sale of recreation properties. This is followed by a fun one – our annual public safety awards.  I believe this is when we honor officers and civilians who performed extraordinary services on behalf of the city.

The general session starts with recognition of National Public Works Week. The consent calendar is pretty small – our annual approval of the assessment for the Downtown Parking Maintenance District, a custodial services contract, and an application for green bicycle lanes.
