Sunnyvale mourns loss of Councilmember Swegles

I’m not really up for saying much about this, so I’ll just post the city’s press release. Ron was a special person and a real asset to Sunnyvale, and we’re all mostly just trying to wrap our heads around this and deal with it right now. Please send your good thoughts to Gail and his family.

ROAD CLOSURE – Evelyn On-ramp to Mathilda

From the City’s website:

NOTICE OF RAMP CLOSURE STARTING JULY 18 THROUGH SEPTEMBER
Due to construction of a new bridge, the ramp from west bound Evelyn to north bound Mathilda WILL BE CLOSED beginning July 18 for 2 months. Detour signs will be posted to navigate around the closure.

You’ve been warned. Bummer – I like taking that one. Then again, I mostly liked it because of the “no right turn on red” on Washington west-bound at Mathilda – and I noticed recently that those signs have been taken down. So maybe it’s less important now. But it’s still worth noting.

Onizuka News

Well, it’s been an interesting time, indeed…

You may recall that when we last discussed Onizuka, Council was torn between reusing the land as sports fields or allowing Foothill-DeAnza to use it to establish a satellite campus. So we voted to pursue both, in part to hedge our bets. This caused the FHDA Board of Trustees to go off and decide whether or not they also wanted this (although our decision was based on the Trustees coming to us). And we sat back and waited to see what happened next.

6/28/2011 Council Summary – We Have a Budget

A long and difficult night.

We were a man short, because Councilmember Swegles was out sick and unable to attend even by telephone (and I’ll add that we really missed his presence more and more as the night went on).  We started the evening with recognition of Parks and Recreation Month, and after I made a couple of announcements, it was on to business. The consent calendar passed without any items being pulled, and we moved to public comments, which wasn’t brief this time.
