Today was a very interesting day. All of Council and all of staff (plus some members of the public) spent the day going through Sunnyvale’s issues and challenges, department by department, in a very frank and open way. This is the second time we’ve done this, and this time was even better than the last time. There were some very important takeaways that came from this. Continue reading
A Business Journal article about recent office space acquisitions in Sunnyvale raises a very interesting point that is worth emphasizing. Less than two years ago, the office vacancy rate in Sunnyvale was at 54% – more than half of all office buildings were vacant. That percentage has plummeted significantly in the past year, to the point that the Business Journal predicts we will have less than 10% office vacancy in Sunnyvale. In other words, we’re full up, pretty much. And we’re getting a lot of developers looking to build more office space as well – we approved two large buildings in Moffett Park and one in Peery Park in just the past six months.
Fresh from the City’s web site, Apple has committed to occupy the second office building in Sunnyvale’s downtown, next to Nokia. Apple is expected to take over the space in about six months. This is a huge win for Sunnyvale, and an important step towards making our downtown successful. Congrats to the City Manager, Wells Fargo, and Apple, for making this happen. And yay, us.
And for the record, I had absolutely nothing to do with this development, either on Sunnyvale’s side or on Apple’s side.
Relatively short night, all things considered. We started the evening with a closed session regarding existing litigation (no comment).
Pretty diverse evening.
The evening kicks off with yet another closed session, this time involving existing litigation against the city. It’s a short one, though, followed by a joint study session with the Parks & Rec Commission regarding the city’s policy regarding Park Dedication and our priorities for the various pending projects (I think). Then it’s on to open session.
