4/24/2011 Council Preview

Looks like another long night.  Really full agenda, plus a long study session at the beginning.

We start the evening with a joint study session with the Planning Commission about the project approval process and decision authority for land use applications.  I believe this involves a review of the various decisions that the city makes regarding applications that we get, and which body has authority over which decisions (staff, the Planning Commission, or the City Council).  I’m not positive about that, though.

BREAKING: LinkedIn Expands to Sunnyvale

I’m pleased to announce that LinkedIn has decided to occupy a significant amount of space in Sunnyvale.  They are taking over two buildings in Peery Park, off of Vaqueros and Del Rey (NW of Maude and Mathilda), with plans to have 500 employees in Sunnyvale by the end of the year.  I’d like to welcome LinkedIn to our fair city, and if there’s anything we can do to make their stay more pleasant, I hope they’ll ask.  They should have all of my contact information on my LinkedIn page…

Kudos to our staff for everything they did to make this possible!

Schools and Home Prices

Want to know why you should support school bonds and parcel taxes?  Better schools increase home values – in a very big way.

The Brookings Institution has a new study that suggests there is a huge difference in the property value of homes near high-rated schools and homes near low-rated schools.  Well, it doesn’t so much suggest it as state it outright.  And it’s a difference that dramatically dwarfs the sum total of all existing and proposed bonds and taxes, at least that exist in Sunnyvale.

One always has to use caution about cause and effect when interpreting a study like this.  But County Assessor Larry Stone is a huge proponent of school bonds and parcel taxes.  He has seen many cases in Santa Clara County of dramatic differences in the property value of houses on opposite sides of the same street, where the only difference is a school district boundary that runs down the center of the street.  If you own a home, you need to be aware that one of the most significant factors in its value is the quality of its schools.  And you should remember that when you’re voting on school funding ballot measures.  Those measures tend to be a very direct investment in the value of your property, simply because of their impact on the local quality of education.

Congressman Honda To Visit

Congressmember Mike Honda will be visiting Sunnyvale to speak at the Democratic Club of Sunnyvale this Saturday, April 28th, from 2-4 p.m. at the Fairbrae Swim Club off of Sheraton.  Congressmember Honda will be running for our newly-redistricted congressional district, and he’s likely to end up representing Sunnyvale.  I hope you get a chance to attend and meet Congressmember Honda.
