Forbes has an interesting article on the resurgence of manufacturing in Silicon Valley, and why it is still an ideal place for certain types of manufacturing despite the high cost of labor. Among the companies mentioned is Sunnyvale’s Intuitive Surgical, which produces some pretty amazing robotic surgery devices (I got to try one of them out a few months ago – really cool). It’s a good read for folks who are concerned about US and Bay Area manufacturing.
The Mercury News is reporting that Sunnyvale Public Safety made an arrest in a string of arson fires occurring in the Casa de Amigos mobile home park recently. Congrats to them for a job well done.
The Sunnyvale Sun has the details of the Centennial video contest that this year’s Leadership Sunnyvale class is sponsoring. Every graduating class is required to take on one special thing to serve its class or the community, and this year’s class has chosen this as a particularly innovative addition to our Centennial Celebration. Check out the story and start making your videos!
In case you missed the news, Kiplingers has ranked Sunnyvale the seventh best city in the nation in which to raise a family. The Mercury News has a follow-up article talking about the ranking and interviewing our own Kathy Besser and Mayor Spitaleri. It’s a great read.
So I’m trying to determine the nexus here. We’re the seventh best city in the nation for raising a family. We’re the top city in the nation for dating a nerd. And we’re the top per-capita purchasers of the Hunger Games, indicating we’re a top spot for literacy. Apparently, the media is telling the world that Sunnyvale is the best place in the country for a woman to find herself a literate computer geek and raise a family.
I strongly deny any allegations that this is all just a ploy to find me a girlfriend.
A very long and emotional night.
We started the evening with not one but two closed sessions, the first regarding ongoing negotiations with SEA, the second involving the City Manager’s 6-month performance review. As usual, not much I can say, other than “stay tuned”.
