The state has released a peer-reviewed report on the anticipated near-term and long-term impacts of climate change, and it makes for a good read. In short, it will impact coastlines, fire seasons, levees, power production, and the water supply just for starters, and the impacts are already being felt. The report itself is a surprisingly easy read. We’re wrestling with these issues in Sunnyvale, both directly (planning for flooding in the northern part of the city) and indirectly (coping with water supply issues). I encourage you to check it out.
Lots of stuff going on this week.
We start the evening with a closed session regarding the Downtown. Then we have an extended joint study session of some importance with the Board of Library Trustees to discuss options for future library and civic center facilities. This should be a very interesting discussion. We’re going to be jumping back and forth a bit this night – starting in the West Conference Room for the closed session, going to the Library Program Room (A + B) for the joint study session, then returning to Council Chambers for the Council meeting.
Interesting night. We started the evening with a closed session to discuss the City Attorney recruitment process. Not much I can say about this beyond that.
We then had public announcements, which included our ongoing recruitment for boards and commissions. I’ll toss in here that we’ve recently had two resignations that we will need to fill, one on the Sustainability Commission, one on the Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Commission (which was already down a body). If you’re interested, get your application in quickly, because we’re about to close it for the next round of interviews. That doesn’t prevent you from applying, but it does mean you’d have to wait maybe six months before the next round of interviews. So applying quickly would be good.
The Silicon Valley Business Journal is reporting that the latest company to move into the Moffett Business Park is none other than Amazon, specifically its Lab126 subsidiary, which produces the Kindle. Welcome to the neighborhood!
Just a note that all City flags will be flown at half-staff until Wednesday night, July 25th, out of respect for the Aurora, CO shooting victims.
