2013/14 Budget Town Hall Meeting on June 8th

I’ll be holding my fifth Town Hall Meeting on Saturday, June 8th from 4-6 p.m. at the De Anza Park building.  The focus will mostly be on the proposed 2013/14 budget, and we’ll go over the proposed increases to city services that we’ll be considering this year (it’s a “yippee!” budget year for a change).  But there will be time to chat about other topics of interest.  As usual, light refreshments will be served.  I hope to see lots of you there!

Sunnyvale Burglary Scam Alert

The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety wants residents to be alert for this burglary scam:

On May 17th, an elderly resident of Lakewood Village fell victim to a burglary scam.  During the early afternoon of the 17th, a suspect knocked on the victim’s front door. When the victim answered the door, the suspect advised that he has been contracted to re-build a backyard fence at her neighbor’s residence and asked to go into the victim’s backyard. The victim joined him, and they discuss the fence for about 15 minutes. After the suspect departed, the victim discovered that her house had been rummaged through and jewelry was stolen.  Residents are advised to be aware of this type of scam, and to call 9-1-1 immediately if such a situation occurs at their residence.

This is not a new scam, but it hasn’t occurred much in Sunnyvale, so residents should be aware of it.

Sunnyvale’s Unemployment Rate Plummets

The State Economic Development Department has put out the April unemployment statistics, and the state’s unemployment dropped dramatically from 9.4% in March to 9% in April.  The statistics also show a dramatic drop in unemployment across Santa Clara County, and in Sunnyvale specifically.  In the past month, the county’s unemployment rate dropped from 7.2% in March to 6.5% in April.  Sunnyvale’s rate dropped from 6.1% in March to 5.5% in April.  This is a significant drop from last April’s rate of 7% – 22% of Sunnyvale’s unemployed found jobs in just the past year.

More to do, still.
